Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands, due to open in Q2, 2021, is the first five-star hotel in the luxury, lifestyle precinct of New Quay, a vibrant waterfront promenade only minutes from Melbourne’s city centre. This architecturally distinct hotel with a captivating design is also the first new-build Marriott branded hotel in Australia in over 20 years.
Perfectly positioned on the corner of Waterfront Way & Docklands Drive, Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands enjoys sweeping panoramic views across Melbourne’s CBD skyline, Bolte Bridge, Port Phillip Bay and Hobsons Bay. With 189 guestrooms and a one-of-a-kind resort-style rooftop infinity pool, Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands is destined to become an urban haven.
As the name suggests, Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands’ identity is inextricably bound by its location; Melbourne- a European-esque Australian city of hidden spaces, iconic laneways, effervescent nightlife, arts and culture; and specifically, the Docklands waterfront.
Owned by Capital Alliance Group and designed by DKO Architecture the design references the city’s vibrant culture, waterfront and Melbourne’s enduring spirit. Bluestone, long regarded warmly as a symbol of Melbourne’s distinctive heritage, takes centre stage in the design and is enriched by travertine counters and natural stone walls, while the multiple separate entrances to the hotel are a nod to Melbourne’s famed reputation as a city of laneways.
Developer Capital Alliance founder, Mohan Du said he was thrilled with the outcome of the $250 million project. “It’s been an exciting process to watch the Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands come to life,” he said. “The building’s design is uniquely elegant and adds an element of sophistication to the evolving architectural landscape in Docklands.”
Taking cues from the contours of yachts in the city’s harbour, DKO have envisioned a building of graceful curves. This gentle and soothing motif transitions harmoniously from the exterior of the building through to the interior, complemented by the fluted glass windows of the lobby, with art installations gently ushering guests through to the connecting laneway.
DKO Director and Head of Interior Design, Michael Drescher has used this curvilinear motif throughout, interpreting the flow of water with the fluidity of design within. Local Melbourne artists and artisans have been commissioned to create boutique fixtures and to set the scene, Melbourne lighting designer Volker Haug has created feature pendant lights for the restaurant that further create a sense of comfortable intimacy.

Guestrooms evoke a sense of calm sophistication as the colour palette reveals itself in darker tones. Timber joinery and flooring with metallic fixtures provide polished accents in the design, while the floor-to-ceiling windows provide for a myriad of views throughout the building. Considered elements in the rooms include an external wardrobe where guests can showcase their latest fashion purchases and the standard work desk has been replaced by a versatile occasional table and chairs providing a contemporary urban residential feel to the rooms.
DKO Director and Head of Interiors, Michael Drescher, says “Designing a hotel means not only playing with all of one’s senses; but creating spaces which will connect each visitor to place. Cues from architecture, site history, and local culture are all influences on the interiors. From scent right through to touch, this hotel will infer a sense of sophistication, with undertones of seduction which Melbourne is known for.”
Wrapping the curved façade of the 15th floor is the rooftop pool and adjoining bar that is firmly slated to become a must-visit urban resort destination. This standout new addition to Melbourne’s sophisticated bar and restaurant scene will sit atop the building and will instantly transport guests beyond the Melbourne skyline to a scene reminiscent of the French Riviera. A combination of timber and natural stone flooring, banquette style seating and dramatic battened ceilings reflect the interior of a luxury yacht. The expansive glass windows offer a dramatic sense of space, filling the bar with an abundance of pure, natural light and a serene sense of urban escapism.
The hotel will also be the first Marriott in Australia to feature the exclusive ‘M Club’ executive lounge. An intimate residential style living room, the design features a combination of timber and marble elements and is tailored to suit a variety of occasions from independent work to group gatherings. The adjoining outdoor terrace offers a rare al fresco space in the heart of Docklands.
General Manager Girish Talreja said he was thrilled to be ushering in a new era for the Marriott brand in this region. “We recognise that the needs of travellers have evolved and that the lines between work and play are increasingly blurred,” he said. “In initiating this project with Capital Alliance and DKO we sought to achieve a design that would allow our guests to work and unwind on their terms and I’m confident that we’ve achieved this.”
Dining and imbibing will take centre stage at Melbourne Marriott Docklands. The ground floor restaurant has been designed with approachable dining in mind. The high vaulted ceiling with rendered finish, herringbone timber flooring, intimate booth seating with plush green fabrics and leather detail adds texture and intrigue to the culinary experience. This feature restaurant will appeal to Melbourne’s foodie heart offering a collection of epicurean delights, with hyper-locally sourced produce and seasonal menus.
